Alcatel and TSKL launch GSM network in Kiribati

Nouméa, 23 december, 2004  Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA and TSKL (Telecom Services Kiribati Limited), the national telecom service provider in Kiribati, launch "FrigateNET" the first digital cellular network in this group of islands in the Pacific.

Under the terms of this contract, signed few months ago, Alcatel has provided TSKL with its Evolium" solution including a Mobile Switching Centre, base stations and prepaid service.

This GSM network is now operational and support more than 2,000 subscribers, with full capability to be expanded to meet market demand in future.  GSM coverage is initially available in Tarawa, the main island and will be extended to Christmas and Fanning Islands very soon. Those islands are the most populated islands in Kiribati.

TSKL offer to its mobile customers value added services such as voice mail service and Short Message System (SMS). Alcatel managed the global project from the first stages of implementation, taking responsibility for installation and integration, network testing, commissioning, training and technical assistance. Moreover, Alcatel supplied TSKL with its new range of mobile phones and accessories of One Touch series.

This contract is a major milestone for Kiribati Islands. The implementation of a mobile infrastructure will contribute further to the country's development.
