Three days Workshop on Strategic Leadership and ICT/ Telecom Management by Graduate School of Business, Faculty of Business and Economics ,The University of the South Pacific.

Responding to a request from the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA), the Graduate School of Business (GSB) of the University of the South Pacific (USP) successfully conducted a three-day Workshop on Strategic Leadership and ICT/ Telecom Management, at USPs Statham campus on Oct 4-6, 2010. About thirty representatives of PITA members from nine regional countries participated in the Workshop. Facilitators of the Workshop included several international members of the GSB faculty, with experience in the areas, as well as an invited Canadian telecommunication expert.

Opening the Workshop, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of USP, Dr. Esther Williams welcomed participants to this Workshop on a very pertinent topic in todays business world. She also highlighted the long history of close cooperation between USP and PITA and expressed her confidence that this cooperation will grow even stronger once PITA takes possession in the near future of its planned office space in the top floor of the brand new and state-of-the-art Japan Pacific ICT Centre in USPs Laucala Bay campus.

Dr Williams also added that following suggestions from the PITA members, GSB has been planning to introduce appropriate degree, diploma or certificate programs on telecommunications/ICT management, and also an MBA with specialization in ICT management, starting with flexible staircase format of the programs. The Workshop participants strongly endorsed the ideas.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day workshop, Professor Biman Chand Prasad, Professor of Economics and Dean of Faculty of Business and Economics, briefly dwelt on how information and communication technologies (ICT) have affected our lives in innumerable ways. He also expressed fervent hope that appropriate and innovative applications of ICT would also be able to significantly pull up Fiji's traditional strengths in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism, and create jobs for the future. He expressed his pleasure in learning from the participants that the Workshop was of great benefit to them, and promised his full support to many such initiatives in the future. Dr Prasad was happy to present Certificate of Participation to each of the participants.

The President of PITA, Ivan Fong, and Fred Christopher, the Manager, also expressed their happiness with the successful conclusion of the Workshop, and in particular the responsiveness by the University with the needs for this industry. They promised to organize more such events for PITA members in cooperation with the USP.
