The Pacific at a Turning Point: Standing Strong in a Connected Future
April 25, 2026
Across our Pacific, the story is changing. It’s no longer just about getting connected—it’s about where we stand in the bigger digital world, and how we shape our own future within it.
New forces are arriving on our shores—artificial intelligence, satellite networks, and global tech giants. These bring real opportunity: better coverage, stronger networks, and new services for our people. But they also bring questions. Who holds the power? Who benefits in the long run? And how do we make sure the Pacific is not just a customer, but a partner with a voice?
We are walking a careful path. We need global partnerships—there is no doubt about that. But we must also protect what matters to us: our sovereignty, our sustainability, and our ability to create value for our own communities. Not everything is always visible in the fine print, and small markets like ours must be wise and united in how we engage.
Looking ahead, we cannot move forward alone or in silos. The future will depend on working together—as countries, as a region. Shared infrastructure, better connections between our islands, smart use of satellite and fibre, and stronger control over our data—these are not just ideas anymore, they are necessities.
At the same time, we face a real challenge: much of the value in today’s digital world is captured elsewhere, by large global platforms. That means we must be deliberate. We must stay in the game—not step back—by investing, partnering wisely, and ensuring Pacific players remain part of the value chain.
There is no single path forward. Some choices will lean toward global integration, others toward local control, and many will sit somewhere in between. What matters is that these choices are made by us, for us—guided by our realities, our strengths, and our long-term vision.
Join us in our next series of meetings in helping us shape our future technology directions for the Pacific.
